When he was young, Francesco Crispi was a republican and a revolutionary. By old age, he had become a monarchist and one of the most conservative prime ministers Italy has ever had. This kind of regression is not singular to humans. Even firms follow the same pattern: young firms are revolutionary and opposed to any form of barriers to entry. When they mature, they generally lose the ability to innovate, but acquire the ability to lobby, which they use to block the entrance of new, more innovative, firms. It happened to Microsoft. In the early 80s it was one of the most innovative companies, trying with great difficulty to break the dominance of IBM in personal computers. By the late 90s, it had become a dominant firm, prosecuted by the American antitrust authorities.
